This article analyzes charitable medical missionary activity of James McLean Rogers, M.D. (1917-1940 present in Korea), a surgeon missionary sent to Korea by the Presbyterian Church, U.S. in October 1917. He belonged to the Soonchun Mission Station of the Southern Presbyterian Mission in the U.S. in Korea (SPMK) and took charge of Alexander Hospital, and his performance in the 1930s was second to none to that of Severance Hospital, the united hospital of six mission societies in Korea. He performed free in charity on more than 60% of patients visiting the hospital. This article aims to study the characteristics of his charitable medical missionary work and suggests an example in the social service for Korean churches today. To this end, this article first studies the socioeconomic background of Soonchun territory, the first start of Soonchun Mission Hospital, the construction and expansion of Alexander Hospital, and Rogers’ charitable medical missionary activities and the activities of helpers. The analysis data for this includes the annual minutes of the SPMK (1913-1940), contributions from missionaries including Rogers, personal mission reports, and materials produced by Koreans, including media articles at the time.
