This study aims to analyze the modes of ‘invention' of the native Americans in the 19th century American culture and literature by the mainstream white culture, and to probe its significance in the context of the establishment of American national literature. Hobomok, The Last of the Mohicans, and Hope Leslie, all written in 1820s with the theme of the relationships of American natives and whites in the setting of the 17th century colonial America, give sympathetic but reserved descriptions of the natives and their emotional involvement with whites while the natives are eventually exiled, maimed or killed, at least partly, due to their affection toward whites. These victimization of the natives are romanticized, idealized, and fixated into the image of the ‘vanishing Indians.'
On the other hand, these three works diverge in their outlooks for the possibility of building a new nation without sacrificing minority groups such as natives and women. Cooper, who works in the sphere of mythic history, describes the removals of the native Americans as a mythic and inevitable process and thereby relieves whites of their guilty feelings and burdens. Child, and more progressively Sedgwick, emphasize the peace-making and mediating role of women. Cooper's way of dealing with the native Americans' fate in the expanding white supremacy is more congenial to its ideology, which partly explains the process of canonization of American national literature where Cooper's works are included in the American canon while the works by Child and Sedgwick have been fallen to the gradual obscurity in spite of their popularity in their times.
