The First New Left in England was a group of independent leftists that formed in opposition to the Russian invasion of Hungary and the British invasion of Suez. The group was composed mainly of young socialists from Oxford and rebels who had defected from the Communist Party, or who were involved in independent activities from the Labor or Communist Parties. They tried to intervene politically in England by publishing The New Reasoner, University and The Left Review and New Left Review. Later, leading the development of British Left Culturalism, they emphasized the importance of cultural analysis because the working class’s life experience and awareness were the key elements in the making of working class. Leftist culturalism also created excellent academic achievements. This current of thought has materialized into an independent research field that has become a source for cultural studies and a new form of historical studies called “history from below.” In this study, I analyze the meaning of leftist culturalism within the political and social context that gave birth to the First New Left in England (1956-1963). I identify the differences between the major theorists represented in the currents of the movements of the First New Left and culturalism and clarify how those differences shape their intellectual products. Through this research, I suggest how The Long Revolution by Raymond Williams and The Making of the English Working Class by Edward Palmer Thompson were related to the intellectual debates within the First New Left at the time.
