Since the global financial crisis in 2008, there have been shocking political changes in several advanced countries. It is often a newly emerged far-right populist force which has led such an upheaval. Far-right populists criticize the elite who has promoted the neoliberal globalization, and (re)vitalize mass politics on the basis of exclusionary nationalism. Political scientist Chantal Mouffe asserts that the left should intervene such a conjuncture, and proposed a populist strategy from the left perspectives. In fact, Podemos in Spain and Bernie Sanders movement in USA can be counted as the cases of left populism. Advocates of left populism including Mouffe insist that the present time is a moment which mass politics must be (re)vitalized through left or right populism. In other words, it can be called the ‘populist moment’. The followings are prevailing in the moment: widespread discontent towards the elite who, enjoying enormous windfall income, brought about the financial crisis; general unrest resulting from the absence of an alternative for neoliberal capitalism; media revolution connected with the arrival of network society, and so on. Also in recent Korean society, these are prevailing trends. It means that populist forces can rise up rapidly in Korea, too. In Korea, the Candlelight protest in 2016-17 made the liberal force take power in contrast with other advanced countries where populist forces have gained power. But, if the liberal government will fail to conduct social reforms, discontents especially among the milennials may turn to a kind of basis for populism. Above all, it should be noticed that populism has developed in the typical American political configuration in which mass politics grows without strong class organizations, not in the typical European political configuration in which class organizations and political parties are combined organically. The political situation in Korea is similar with the former. Already there’s a symptom of Korean-style far-right populism in the attempts to confront younger generation, precarious workers and small shopkeepers with the ‘democratization’ generation, organized workers. The left force in Korea must acts preemptively during the grace period which the Candlelight protest has brought about. Above all, Korean-style left populism should present not only green new deal programme which answer to the global climate change, but also housing new deal programme which alleviate property gaps among generations, classes, regions.
