This study views Petruchio’s taming of Katherine as one man’s efforts to charm a woman. Petruchio is an intelligent man who intimates his intent to become the husband that Katherine had been waiting for. He succeeds in establishing an intimate relationship with her and finally wins her respect and love. He charms her by having recourse to well-planned psychological tactics, executed in precision until Katherine becomes cognizant of the ill-suited ways she had been living as a shrew. His charming tactics span from various combination of psychological therapies to simple gestures of support and encouragement befitting a couple in love. The make of Petruchio in all aspects transgresses stereotypical Elizabethan man. He is a man of high self-confidence with a challenging spirit who resorts to use of intimating and psychological tactics to move and charm Katherine. He elevates Katherine to the level of a befitting marital partner for him. By resorting to cleverly crafted strategies, Petruchio usurps the prerogative of Katherine and locks himself in an intimate relationship with Katherine thereby putting him and her in a win-win position. Petruchio, himself, was not bound by preconceptions and refused to view Katherine in the same light as the other men. As a result, he ends up being rewarded while Hortensio and Lucentio, who sought out an exemplary Elizabethan bride under the hope that they would be able to have full authoritative power in the relationship, end up with a result that is exactly the contrary.
The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy that emphasizes equal status of both genders in a marriage, a marital relationship that is not lopsided and gives both genders equal power in terms of humanitarian perspective. Shakespeare uses humor to convey the message that for a married couple to sustain their love, a compromise must be made between the husband and the wife.
