This paper aims to analyze the strategies of popularizing Shakespeare in the Hollywood teen film adaptations, focusing on 10 Things I Hate about You, loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. In 10 Things I Hate about You, the director Gil Junger exploits several strategies to popularize Shakespeare to teenagers; first he sets his film adaptation as a romantic comedy set in a modern-day Padua High School in order to attract the teenage spectators. Second, Junger intertwines the original story with feminist messages by way of presenting Kat as a very opinionated outcast and teenage rebel in her last year of high school. While Taming of the Shrew takes on the contention of male dominance during the Shakespearean time, 10 Things I Hate about You takes on the sexual power of a woman, turning the one-sided marriage in the former into a genuine feeling in relationships and dating. Contrary to the original Shakespearean play that explores the inequality of power between genders, loyalty and obedience and the importance it plays in relationships and the social repressions of females, 10 Things I Hate about You explores the gender relations and suggests the desirable relationship between men and women.
