In 1894, Herman Bavinck(1854-1921) stresses the importance and significance of the doctrine of ‘Common Grace’ delivered in his rectorial address of Theologische Hogeschool te Kampen. He was the first to reintroduce the doctrine in the reformed circles at the end of 19th century, which was lain dormant since Genevan Reformer, John Calvin(1509-1564) mentioned it. Nine months later Abraham Kuyper(1837-1920) deals with the doctrine of Common Grace systematically in long period of almost six years in the Christian weekly newspaper called ‘The Herald’ (De Heraut). The doctrine of Common Grace is intimately related to the God’s sovereignty, and a biblical teaching that God as creator and saviour, rules and governs the universe according to His pleasure. In particular the doctrine is the doctrine of Church believing that God’s sovereign power is applied to every area of human life such as politic, economy, society, culture, science, art, sports, and home, etc.
This writer feels a great need to re-introduce the doctrine of common grace to the 21st Korean Church and society by translating Bavinck’s rectorial address on Common Grace (De algemene genade). There are at least two reasons for this. First, it is a theological concern for the Korean Church. The modern Korean Church is facing a great crisis of living and activity. Since the latter part of 1990s the Korean Church experiences not only a minus growth, but also a little reliability by the society. The sovereignty of God taught by common grace should be again propagated and applied in every domain of the Korean society. Second, it is a more practical reason. Bavinck’s Common Grace is translated as 『일반은총론』 by professor Y. B. Cha. This Korean version is, however, not published any more and the readers cannot purchase it. Moreover, this Korean version is translated in both Korean and Chinese. Hoping to overcome theses obstacles, this writer tries to translate Bavinck’s Common Grace into Korean.
