This essay presents my own reflection on some views towards Korean poetic songs of the premodern times and the methodological bases of studies on the songs. I clearly elucidate that the views and methods based on nationalism and aestheticism have overwhelmed all the activities of studying Korean classical poetic songs since the beginning of the modern times, so that scholars have neglected to investigate the texts and genres in specific contexts. Such a tendency has lasted in our academic world until today. Unless the specific context of every text is clear, however, Korean classical songs and studies on this genre cannot be sympathized by contemporary recipients, whose emotions are quite different from those who had the same ideology with the founders of Korean classical poetic songs.
Understanding every text in the same context with the writer or composer is a crucial prerequisite for sympathy and appreciation. In order to expand sympathy, therefore, I suggest that researchers and scholars should work harder on philology on the basis of contextual study on one hand, avoiding ethnology-oriented nationalism and aestheticism, on the other.
