The present study aims to investigate the metonymic expressions in the Gospel of Matthew and find out how they were used in those days. The results of the study are as follows: First, various types of metonymy were used in the Gospel of Matthew: PART FOR WHOLE, WHOLE FOR PART, CAUSE FOR EFFECT, ACTOR FOR ACTION, CONTAINER FOR CONTENT, and much more; second, metonymy is classified into four associations, i.e., spatial, temporal, sequential, and attributive; third, the non-referential use as well as the referential use of the metonymy in the Gospel of Matthew is found in the forms of "nouns" and "verbs" fourth, different metonymic uses may underlie one single word; fifth, unlike the ordinary language, religious symbolism such as light and cross is often found in the Gospel of Matthew; finally, people including St. Matthew 2000 years ago had metonymic thinking like modern people.
