With a number of context-specific differences, religion is found to be resurgent today in every sphere, including the public sphere, falsifying the classical thesis of secularization that religion would fade away as the process of modernization advanced. One of the important visible sites where we witness to the resurgence is the contemporary advanced digitized media, which “transforms” religion into a virtual (virtu+real) reality, endeavoring to collapse the actual into virtual. Does this virtual religion contribute to opening of closures (dis-closures) or closing of open spaces (enclosures) is a question that engages anyone who tries to understand the interface between public religion and the advanced media today. The present essay reflects analytically upon such salient dimensions of virtual religion as ‘constituting virtual communities,’ ‘offering a different experience of religious plurality,’ ‘freeing from exclusionary hierarchies,’ ‘homogenizing,’ ‘targeting audience,’ ‘technological determinism’ and so on. That the increasingly migrant humanity today draws much support from virtual religion, which journeys with them, offering a virtual religious community as a heterotopic space, even a space of anti-structure; that virtual religion renders a quasi-embodied virtual experience of plurality of religion, as against the modernist dualism; that virtual religion ensures better freedom from exclusionary hierarchies; etc., orient virtual religion toward an experience of opening, a dis-closure. However, the homogenizing tendency of the contemporary text-based orality, the second orality, attendant upon virtual religion; the communication of virtual religion targeting specific audience for set agendas; the technocratic deterministic codes operative behind virtual religions; etc., tilt the role of virtual religions towards ‘en-closures’. It is then a situation of mixed opportunities, borne by aspects of dis-closures and enclosures.
