Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the semantic structure for the reorganizing experience of the neglected elderly to construct theoretical framework. Methods: This study was qualitative research by grounded theory methodology. Data were analyzed by Strauss & Corbin"s grounded theory method. The participants were 22 elderly not having any family visitation or contact in six months or more and those who understand the purpose of this study and voluntarily agree to participate. Results: Through constant comparative analysis, 68 concepts, 26 sub-categories, and 13 categories were identified. A core category emerged as ‘Just living not to die’. The Phenomenon was ‘Hiding resentment’, and Causal condition was ‘Grasping reality’. ‘Seeking a means of living’ was extracted as a context, and Action/interaction strategies were ‘Taking care of health’, ‘Relying on religious life’, ‘Remaining aloof’, ‘Accepting’, ‘Leaving a life entirely to the situation’ and ‘Enduring’. Intervening condition influencing the strategies was ‘Building new relationships’. Consequences were ‘Living well alone’, ‘Trying to settle in’ and ‘Living while waiting’. Conclusion: A comprehensive understanding of the experience of the neglected elderly is required, and they should be helped to live without despair by precisely identifying their nursing needs and providing them with necessary nursing intervention.
