Purpose: This study was conducted to generate a grounded substantive theory of the ego-integration experience of the elderly who had children with mental disorder. Methods: Eight elders with children who had received a medical treatment of psychosocial rehabilitation therapy either at the community mental health center or day hospitals were interviewed. Data were collected by in-depth interviews and were analyzed by the grounded theory Results: Sixteen categories with 47 sub-categories extracted from 227 concepts. The identified phenomenon was "hopelessness which the sky fell down" and the core category was "embracing their mental illness children by heart". The 16 categories were grounded into 6 stages for the ego-integration process; recognizing the problem, wandering, trying to overcome the problem, taking a rest, preparing for the future of their children, accepting and living with the problem. Conclusion: This results indicate that elders having children with mental disorder are ego-integration process is developed. Health professionals need to develop nursing intervention to assist this process of the elders having children with mental disorder.
