Report Errors
Helicopter firstly flown several years later than airplane, started its production in 1942. The value of the helicopter increased after they were used for various missions in Korean war early 1950’s. Although the helicopter has special capability; vertical takeoff and landing(VTOL), it has limited performance in speed and range. A number of attempts have been made to quest for the speed since 1950’s. Tilting aircraft utilized the same rotor or propeller for vertical takeoff and landing as well as high speed flight by tilting them during transition flight; this type of model can be called ’transformative rotorcraft’. The other method utilizes additive propellers or wings on the rotor-driven helicopter, called ’compound rotorcraft’. Korea has been building up the tilt rotor development technology since 2002. Recently programs for high speed UAV development for production are under way. Past tilting aircraft development and flight test experiences were surveyed and several lessons could be extracted.
