Daegu Modern Alley Tourism(DMAT) is a form of Cultural Heritage Tourism(CHT) in which tourists walk along the complex web of meandering old alleys in the old town district of Daegu City and appreciate material and discursive traces of early modern times scattered in every nook and corner of the alleys. As a genre of CHT that produces and consumes cultural heritages in a form of cultural commodity, DMAT involves not only the economic and pragmatic effects observed in general tourism industries but also assumes significant political and ideological implications. DMAT registers two distinctive characteristics. Firstly, unlike the typical CHT designed and administered by the government and the capital, it has evolved from a civil cultural activism. Secondly, its spacial context is not a spectacular and monumental site of history but the space of ordinary alleys in the old town of Daegu City. Due to these particularities, DMAT constructs a far more complex and significant political landscape. This article, based on historical-anthropological methods, illuminates the political landscape of DMAT in terms of two analytical concepts, the museumification of space and the politics of storytelling. DMAT originated from a civil cultural activism led by a dozen of local college students in 2001 and has been institutionalized since 2007 as a form of CHT, being included in the Old Town Redevelopment Projects conducted by the Central District Government of Daegu City. By tracing the unique historical trajectory of DMAT, this study attempts to capture the politics of memory and representation having been unfolded in the field of DMAT and examine its political-ideological implications in the regional society. And with a discourse analysis of the narrative structure of storytelling practiced by DMAT tour guides, it demonstrates that DMAT is a dynamic political arena in which the local identity of Daegu City is formed, contested, and reproduced in conjunction with the city’s politico-economic context.
