The Debate on Xin: Zhuangzi's Argument and Xunzi's Response

Report Errors

Early Chinese thinkers attempted to respond to Mencius, since Mencius had understood xin as the basis for human motivations and actions. This paper focuses especially on Zhuangzi’’s understanding of xin and another Confucian thinker Xunzi’’s response to it. Zhuangzi understood the function of xin negatively and thought that the faculty of memory only distorted the facts and disturbed emotions. In contrast, Xunzi tried to show, in the Jiebi解蔽 chapter of the Xunzi, that humans could make fair judgments through the function of xin, and, therefore, xin should not be regarded simply as the source of distorted judgments and emotional excesses.
