This study analyzes an awareness change of ‘maternalism and mother’ before and after Tŏson’s stay in Franceas described in “When the cherries are ripe”.
Shortly before going to France, Tŏson was aware of ‘maternalism and mother’ for the first time. Although he faced the greatest challenge of his life due to his extramarital relations with his niece, he recognized ‘maternalism and mother’ consistently with correct establishment and growth of awareness. The existing studies describe “When the cherries are ripe” as ‘a review of Tŏson’s development’ and it also proves his positive development from previous confusing recognition of ‘maternalism and mother’. The growth toward a positive consciousness in “When the cherries are ripe” definitely affected his family who he had a negative attitude toward because of his prejudice and his later works in which he tried to reconcile with people around him.
