The purposes of this study were to compare and analyze “In Bukbang” by Baek Seok and “The Madness of King Goll” by Yeats in poetic characteristics and their literary implications. Both the poets expressed their perceptions of reality faced by their respective colonized countries in original poetic methodologies. It is interesting that there are close relations between Baek Seok and Yeats in creative methods. As previous studies reported, Baek Seok’s borrowing of custom materials, one of major features of his poetry, corresponds to Yeats’s creative method of finding his poetic materials in the unique Irish traditions, which suggests the influences of Yeats’s poetry on Baek Seok’s poetry, in which it was creatively embraced.
There are especially many similarities between Baek Seok’s In Bukbang and Yeats’s The Madness of King Goll such as poetic composition and tone, meanings of “I” and “wandering” motif in addition to the material characteristics. Those patterns are worth attention as references to demonstrate correlations between the poems of the two poets more profoundly and as features to check the poetic influences of Yeats on Baek Seok’s poems. The study compared and analyzed the poetic characteristics of the two poets with a focus on the patterns and symbolicity of “I” and “wandering,” which make two central axises in those two poems. The “I” narrative and “wandering” motif commonly found in both the poems show their awareness of the times regarding the reality of their respective colonized countries. The study especially focused on the ethnic implications of “I” and “wandering.” Those characteristics found in “In Bukbang” and “The Madness of King Goll” reflect the two poets’ intention to awaken the readers of the times to the importance of ethnic identity that was gradually disappearing under the colonial situations. The study shed light on the originality of poetic searches expressed by Baek Seok and Yeats as colonial poets by comparing and examining those two poems in commonalities and differences.
