This thesis is based on a qualitative method designed to look at the economic exploitation against female prostitutes in South Korea. The research seeks to locate this issue within the broad context of culture in prostitutions. Women has been financially exploited by pimps, clients and the community, and dual sexual morality, the patriarchal culture and gender insensitive legal system create a favourable environment for economic exploitation, which forces women to sustain prostitution by hindering economic independence. Women are exploited by structural influences, but at the same time they make themselves sustain prostitution. Prostitutes neglect economic independence through high expenditure or frequent borrowing amongst themselves. This consumption culture was taken for granted by prostitutes who consider such expenditure an investment to support competitiveness or sisterhood. They are neither powerless victims who can not control their own lives, nor free from gendered and sexualised exploitation. Although forced prostitution by economic exploitation should not be defended, we must listen sympathetically but critically to the voices of prostitutes.
