Prostitutes are, like lesbians, a sexual minority; prostitutes break the norms of sexual purity. Prostitutes are in a definite minority position in Korea's power structure because they are not only considered sexual "deviants" but are women in a patriarchal society.
Prostitutes are considered outcasts and as such, basic human rights have been denied them; It goes without saying that they have never been treated as "workers" in Korea. In this current situation, the most impending issues that need to be addressed are defense of their human rights and the erasure of the stigma as "immoral bitches, inferior to beasts."
This paper focuses on the prostitutes' long and difficult struggle for self-dignity and organization. The aim of this work is to identify the process by which the hidden voice of prostitutes can be heard and their actions revealed. Furthermore, this work hopes to shed light on the vision, particularity and limitations of their movement from their perspective. To date, works on the human rights movements of prostitutes have been written from the perspective of activists and therefore do not depict the everyday struggles of prostitutes.
This work focuses on: ① construction of 'we 'ness, ② the organization of collecive action, ③ the creation of associations and spaces for prostitutes, ④ coming out, and ⑤ alternative way of living.
The process by which prostitutes have accepted themselves, developed self-consciousness, formed group solidarity, organized, came out into society, worked to overcome theIr social stigma, and started to work collectively to defend their human rights have been reconstructed in this paper.
The one weakness of this paper concerns the methodology. That is, interviews with current and previous prostitutes were not held due to their fear of revealing themselves to non-prostitutes and their hostility toward society. Hence, the main materials used were interviews with and writings of activists, newsletters from movement organizations, stories of prostitutes, indirect interviews with prostitutes, documentaries and lecture notes, among others. Second-hand materials used were anthropological and sociological studies of prostitutes and their lives. All the materials were read and studied with an attempt at understanding them from the prostitutes' point of view.
It is hoped that this work will encourage prostitutes to write their stories and the activists to further record the various actions being taken in this movement.
