This study investigated young children's play behaviors through direct observations at their same -aged classrooms. The subjects were seventy five 3- and 4-year-old children from a university lab in Seoul. To analyze the relationships among children's play behaviors, play mates and participation rates of learning areas, time sampling method was conducted. The teachers rated each child's playfulness using CPS(Barnet, 1990). The collected data were analyzed by t test and Pearson's correlation using SPSS.
The results of the study were as follows: First, children's play behaviors, play mates, and learning areas were significantly related to gender and age. Second, there were significant correlations among children's play behaviors, play mates and participation of learning areas. Third, there was a significant relationship between children's play behaviors and playfulness. Among the subscales of playfulness, ‘physical spontaneity’ and ‘manifest joy’ were positively related to ‘group play’ and negatively related to ‘games with rules’. The higher score the children were rated in 'physical spontaneity', the less they participated in solitary play.
