Traditionally, the university has sought after the truth and has trained the human resources. However, as the society demand that the university contribute to the social development, the university should collaborate with the local government in growing the society. Then, it is very important for the university to realize its own role as local-university.
But most of the universities in Korea has been confronted with the common difficulty. It is that the universities must restructure its organization as considering the growing number of the universities, the government financial aid, the reduction in the number of students, etc. This is the universities in Gyeonggi-Do as well. So in this study, we examine firstly the present condition of the universities in Gyeonggi-Do : for example, the number of the universities, the number of the students, the level of the university tuition fees and the scholarship, the accommodation of the hall of residence, etc. Then, we carried out a survey including the professors and the students of the universities in Gyeonggi-Do and analysed the findings to look at the information. It seems that most of the universities in Gyeonggi-Do require the aid or the support of the local government and that they feel the necessity of the cooperation between Gyeonggi-Do and the universities in Gyeonggi -Do. The local government should organize actively the system of the cooperation with the universities and the local-society. It means that this system will play an important role in the development of the local-society and of Gyeonggi-Do.
For the efficient connection and cooperation between Gyeonggi-Do and the universities in Gyeonggi-Do, we propose : Firstly, Gyeonggi-Do shuold have the ultimate goal of the connection and cooperation between Gyeonggi-Do, the universities in Gyeonggi-Do and the local society. Secondly, this connection and cooperation should not infringe on the universities’ right of autonomy. Finally, Gyeonggi-Do should enact an ordinance to formalize the council of development between Gyeonggi-Do, the universities in Gyeonggi-Do and the local society.
