Spener, the Founder of the Pietism in German noticed the negatvie effect of the corruption of the Protestant churches in German with progressively changing to the institutionally stationary churches under the influence of legitimism rather than following the religious viatlity of Bible. Spener deeply experienced in his pastoral field that a reformed church by Luther returned back to the church of negative effect of corruption in religious dogmatic and stationary church. As a solution, Spener wanted holy churches which performed viable religious life through Bible itself rather than system and religious dogma.
This is the movement of reformed church to aim to perform the word of Scripture. Spener realized the urgency of the need for the church reform and as a solution for that, he practiced ‘the devout meeting’ on the ground of the principle of the small church in the church.
The people attending the devout meeting should be the people of bom again. The revive group of the small group could be the yeast that change the whole church to the viable church. In other word, this is the driving force for being the holy church. The devout meeting group could be the propeller that reforms the German church which used to be non-viable because they put emphasis on the system and dogma.
A few revive group can revive biblical scripture in the church, then practice the good life on the scripture, and then approach to holiness. This movement spread to the whole churches and restore viability in the church. In other word, being the holy church. This is the key idea of the small church in the church.
If that happens, Spener was confident that furthermore, neighbor and society could be changed and Spener was on practicing this meeting.
In this article, I have looked the relationship between believer’s revive and holiness that is required to perform the holiness in the small church in the church that was claimed by Spener.
I think, the ideas the small church in the church claimed by Spener in the 17th century can be applicable to the churches in Korea now. The ideas that appear in the small church in the church are keenly required to the current Korean churches.

독일 경건주의의 창시자인 슈페너는 당시 독일 개신교가 정통주의의 영향아래 성서의 생명력있는 신앙을 따르기보다 제도적으로 고착화된 제도적 교회로 부패해가는 폐단을 보게 된다. 루터를 통해 개혁된 교회가 또 다시 교리화되고 경직화되는 폐단을 슈페너는 자신의 목회현장에서 절감한 것이다. 이에 대해 제도와 교리보다는 성서의 말씀에서 우러나오는 생명력 있는 신앙생활을 실천하는 성결한 교회를 슈페너는 소원한다.
이는 말씀을 실천하는 교회를 지향하는 교회개혁운동이라고 할 수 있다. 슈페너는 교회개혁의 필요성이 시급함을 깨닫고 이에 대한 방안으로 교회 속의 작은 교회라는 원리로 하는 경건의 모임을 자신의 목사관에서 실행한다.
이 경건의 모임에 참여하는 무리들은 중생한 자들이어야 한다. 이 중생한 무리의 작은 모임이 선한 누룩이 되어 전체 교회를 생명력이 있는 교회로 변화시킬수 있다고 슈페너는 여겼다. 이는 곧 성결한 교회로 이끄는 원동력이다. 이 경건의 모임이 제도와 교리를 중요하게 여겨 생명력이 고갈된 독일교회를 변화시키는 추진체가 된다.
교회 안에서 소수의 중생한 무리들이 성서의 말씀을 되살리고 그 말씀을 따라 선한 삶을 실천하여 성결에 이르게 될 때 이것이 전체교회로 확대되고 교회는 생명력을 회복하게 된다. 즉 성결한 교회가 되는 것이다. 이것이 교회속의 작은 교회의 요체이다. 이렇게 되면 더 나아가 이웃과 사회까지도 변화시킬 수 있다고 슈페너는 확신하고 이 모임을 전개해 나간다.
이 글에서는 슈페너가 제창한 ‘교회 속의 작은 교회’에서 경건의 실현을 위하여 요구되는 신자의 중생과 성결의 관계를 살펴보았다.
17세기 슈페너가 주장한 교회 속의 작은 교회 사상은 현재 한국교회에서도 적용이 가능한 사상이라고 사료된다. ‘교회 속의 작의 교회’에 나타나는 사상은 현금 한국교회에도 절실히 요구된다고 하겠다.
