This work discusses the structures of the characters engraved on roofend tiles made during Han Dynasty. It reports the structures mainly in three aspects.
The first is how the characters are arranged. A set of rules is found among the characters. There are tiles with 1 character, with 2 characters, 3 characters, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and finally, with 12 characters on them. Among them, the most commonly found one is the tiles with 4 characters. Also, the 4 characters are arranged in particular manners ; all vertically engraved, top-bottom and clock-wise, top-bottom and left to right, top-bottom and right to left, right bottom to up and left bottom to top, and finally, left top to bottom and right top to bottom.
The second aspect includes omissions and additions of stroke, upturned characters, and sharing strokes that neighboring characters.
The third deals with the style of the engraved characters. The attested styles include the Seal Script, the Official script, which is an ancient style of calligraphy found in the Han Dynasty, the Bird-insect chirography, and finally, the Miuzhuan Seal.
