This paper is designed to pursue a pastoral theological understanding of peace. There has been much rich research on this subject. Most research has been focused on the ideal form of peace based on Biblical and theological traditions. In search of a pastoral theological understanding of peace, I begin with the context of the divided country to which Koreans have been exposed and influenced for more than 70 years. I believe that the long lasting division of the country has left significant traces in the mind of Koreans. I call these traces “the deprived mind” relying on the understanding of psychoanalysis. The goal of this paper is to investigate the shape of the deprived mind and pursue a possible way for its restoration.
First, the paper analyses the relationships between the social structure of the divided country and the psychological effects of the division. For this, I focus on some social phenomena, such as “red complex.” Second, I attempt to understand these social phenomena from the perspective of psychoanalysis. I suggest that the long lasting situation of the division of the country has developed a kind of psychological structure in the mind of Koreans. Located in the unconscious mind, this psychological structure influences Koreans though they cannot recognize its influence. For this reason, I call the psychological structure “the deprived mind.” Next, I suggest a restorative path based on a study of peace which begins with the situation of inner war within unconscious psychological structure. The peace that is suggested is not an idealized peace but a dynamic peace that has to begin with a search of peace. Dynamic peace embraces the reality of inner war and the search of peace. The restoration of the deprived mind can be possible by participating in the reality of Koreans’ inner war.
