Linda Groff traces the evolution of peace concepts. She presents seven aspects of peace: Absence of War, Balance of Forces, No Structural violence, Feminist Peace, Intercultural Peace, Gaia Peace, and Inner/Outer Peace. She argues that seven concepts in the evolution of peace thinking leads to a holistic, integrative view of peace. According to Buddhist teachings, outer peace is valued, but without inner peace, outer peace is not be able to persist. In view of Buddhism, suffering or non-peace is originated from the ignorance of the reality of things ‘as things really are’ and ignorance-based craving, therefore in order to attain our peace, we must see things as they really are, by practicing the eight-fold noble paths. Non-violent action in the world begins with loving oneself. We radiate this loving kindness outward to others who we deem less desirable. In understanding conflict as a phenomenon of mutual interdependence through mindfulness meditation, we come to realize that the parties in conflict are interconnected to each other. Inner peace and outer peace embrace each other in a synergistic way. Buddhist teachings do not neglect outer peace. They suggest that the endeavors toward outer peace must be based on inner peace.
