This paper notices that Chu Yoseb, one of the famous Korean writer who lived in Shanghai during his youth of 1920s, has specific viewpoint when he writes short stories and novella regarding people in Shanghai, such as Rickshaw Puller, Killing, and the price of First Love. He selects the Chinese as a protagonist, or he describes the character inhabits in Chinese community and communicates with them even when the Choseon is chosen as a protagonist. This kind of taking intentional viewpoint is related to question that the common sensibilities and understanding can be found in lives of Shanghai across the national signature. When narrative shows the national is insignificance and powerless for underclass Chinese, it seems to generates the common sensibilities. His works is named as a “New Tendency Literature” by critics such as Park Younghee.
A Choseon protagonist narrative, meanwhile, written by Chu Yoseb aims at consider on whether this kind of common sensibilities could preserve in realities under the pressure of nationalism. The Choseon protagonist consistently raises a question on the framework of the national and love with transnational love could be compatible in realities. In the end, he leaves Shanghai to Pyeong-yang in confrontation of realities that love and desire overcomes the national territories with a rational reason. This decision seems that the national wins a victory over the love but narrative shows another conclusion. The ending of character’s suicide and unfinished work inform there is some remnants that the national does not treat well in realities. Chu Yoseb’s experiments in texts regarding Shanghai should be investigated in that he searches for the possibility of the common sensibilities in realites with a transnational imagination.
