This paper is a review of the historical retrospective craze as an example of historical consumption that developed in Shanghai in the 1990s. In Shanghai at that time, when reform and opening up were in full swing, a unique social phenomenon emerged that appeared to be a collective nostalgia for the history and culture of the 1920s and 30s, which flourished around the colonial space. This basically reflected the epochal transformation of socialist China’s reform and opening up and its access to global capitalism. However, the scope of this phenomenon is too wide to explain it briefly. It happened across a wide range of social fields and there were various types of agents in it. So I have tried to grasp this phenomenon from a more layered perspective and approach comprehensive understanding from as many possible points of view.
The analysis showed that different groups operated simultaneously in the formation and consumption of historical landscapes in Shanghai in the 1990s. Both Municipal authority and citizenry (medium class) joined the trend of restoring Old Shanghai’s history and culture, but the process to which it reached was different. In particular, as for the period of socialism, the former weighed on the continuous transition and the latter weighed on the severance transition. Meanwhile, as a result of this trend, the historical memories of Old Shanghai were reconstructed and distorted. It also led to a crack in the memory of history, as well as a new contest between those memories. This case study is of great help to understand the various contexts in which historical consumption and de-historical phenomena occur.
