This thesis is a trial of several historical explorations on ancient Koreans’ experience and mentality. The major source utilized for this quest are documental data on the fall of Goguryeo, especially those which distinctively possessing the ‘ancient characteristics.’ In this case, the ‘ancient characteristics’ means certain attributes of perception or explanation of the world which contemporary Goguryeo people had. Those are deviant from the common principle, presented in the form of unrealistic guise. For example, ancient people found from or granted causal meanings on astronomical phenomena and disasters occurred in everyday life.
The study executed in four aspects. First, the way of the said people’s explaining and recollecting the fall of Goguryeo has been discussed. Second, the study analyzed the choice behaviors; choosing one as a reasonable record among dissimilar empirical data. Third, the study reviewed the examples of interventions conducted by the later epistemic subject during the pursuit of new explanation. Last, the study focused on the issue of the universal cogency that required for certain record and explanation to be widely shared and transmitted for ages.
In short, the memories and data of ancient experiences were embraced in the influential record, such as Samguk-Sagi. Therefore, it is necessary to focus and approach to the emotion and means of explanation of the initial empirical subject, transcending the time and space. This necessity originates from rendering the following as a fundamental object of studying ancient history: the empirical data deviant from the natural principle and the causal logic implicit in the surrealistic explanation.
