The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of 12 weeks combined exercise program with silverobics and elastic bands on metabolic syndrome risk factors(waist circumference : WC, systolic blood pressure : SBP, diastolic blood pressure : DBP, fasting blood glucose : FBG, triglyceride : TG, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol : HDL-C) in elderly people. The subjects were 30 elderly people over the age of 65(male, n=10; female, n=20). The subjects performed combined exercise program of 60 minutes per each session, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Metabolic syndrome risk factors(WC, SBP, DBP, FBG, TG and HDL-C) were measured and analyzed before and after 12 weeks combined exercise program. The results are as follows. First, before combined exercise elderly male and female subjects hold 4 risk factors(WC, SBP, FBG, TG in male; WC , FBG, TG, HDL-C in female) for the development of metabolic syndrome. Second, after 12 weeks combined exercise program male subjects hold 2 risk factors(SBP, FBG), while female subjects hold 3 risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Third, 12 weeks combined exercise had no significant effects on the decrease of blood pressure in both gender. Fourth, 12 weeks combined exercise program improved significantly 4 risk factors of 5 metabolic syndrome indicators in both gender.
In summary, South Korean over the age of 65 likely to develop cardiovascular disease by holding many risk factors of metabolic syndrome. However, 12 weeks combined exercise program reduced significantly the development possibility for cardiovascular disease originated from metabolic syndrome in both elderly gender. 12 weeks combined exercise program including aerobic and resistance exercise had no significant effect on systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both gender. These results suggest that further studies are necessary in order to analyze the different effect of exercise types on blood pressure in elderly people.
