This study explores the adjacency pairs in English talk-in-interactions between non-native speakers whose native language is Korean. English oral data from 20 participants were transcribed and analysed, applying conversation analysis (CA). All adjacency pairs were identified and grouped by proficiency level(lower- and higher-) of the Korean university students. The analysis of spoken discourse shows the characteristics of adjacency pairs in Korean speakers(KSs). The results show that the types of adjacency pairs used are very similar between the lower- and higher-proficiency groups. Both groups use many adjacency pairs that were inserted in other adjacency pairs to communicate. The lower-proficiency groups have a tendency to use more unmarked types which are different from ordinary conversation because of incompetent pragmatic competence. Compared with the lower-proficiency groups, the higher-proficiency groups have a tendency to use more marked types which are very similar with ordinary conversation. The findings indicate that pragmatic preference structures should be studied in the skillful use of adjacency pairs in KSs. Finally, this study shows interactive characteristics in KSs, suggesting the need to explore the interaction in KSs for pedagogical implications.
