There has been rapid increase in the number of people who want to use smartphones to study English as well as smartphone users in Korea. This study explores how smartphones can be used for English listening tests. For this purpose, it reviews relevant theories such as the definition of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning and study results regarding how smartphones have been used for foreign language learning. However, little research has investigated the methods of taking English listening tests using smartphones. The purpose of this study is to investigate the methods of using smartphones to English listening tests, and to suggest the advantages and disadvantages of it. A sample of 78 university students participated in the research. They took two times of English listening tests with their smartphones and answered a survey which asks their experience on taking English listening tests using their smartphones. The results suggests the methods of using smartphones to take English listening tests and include the results of the survey. The students’ responses were generally positive. However, the methods have both positive and negative aspects. The conclusion part suggests several points to improve the method of taking English listening tests with smartphones.
