This paper aims to explore main characteristics of husbandry through a close reading of his novel A Place on Earth, which is included in the Port William Stories. It is because more than ever in history the realization of husbandry is in need. According to Berry, husbandry is the name of all the practices that sustain life by connecting us conservingly to our places and our world. It is the art of keeping tied all the strands in the living network that sustains us. Under the influence of industrial capitalism and dichotomous thinking, Mother Nature has been downgraded to resources to be exploited. As a result our civilization is at an environmental crisis. Even farmers, who have traditionally played a leading role in doing husbandry, have fallen into the position of the agent of an economy, that is fundamentally adverse to him and to all that he ought to stand for. This is the reason why looking into the meaning of husbandry is meaningful. Exploring the husbandry of Mat Feltner and Old Jack Beechum, true husbands in the true sense of the word in A Place on Earth, this paper ascertains the qualities of husbandry -- satisfaction and peace of mind to the husbands; sympathy and a sense of responsibility towards the members of the community; the circularity. In this sense this is the time to realize the value and role of husbandry in our society in overcoming environmental crisis we face.
