The proverbs about sex include the words that refer to human and animal sexual organs, the direct and indirect expressions referring to sex, and the description implying sexual acts or the situation leading to them. There are many Korean proverbs that refer to sex, and it is estimated that there are more than two thousands proverbs of this kind. We can better understand human instinct, false consciousness and hypocrisy through these sayings. It is very useful to use the sexual proverbs when we discuss sex and sexuality. Although these expressions are vulgar and coarse, they are a way to investigate into human mind and acts. It is interesting to notice that the contemporary Korean novels use the sexual proverbs in expressing sex and sexualities. In this paper, I attempt to demonstrate how the characteristics of certain historical periods are shown in the sexual proverbs.
