The aim of this thesis is to focus on the significance of the heroic characters appeared in Kim , Dong-lee＇<The Cross of Saban> and Jang, Yong-hak＇s <The Legend of Round Shape> and to compare and examine the commons and the differences between two novels. Kim, Dong-lee is a representative writer of the Old Generation and Jang, Yong-hak is a representative writer of the New Generation in 1950s. Generally they have been separated and examined by researchers. However, they have a lot of common things and we have to compare and examine the novels of two writers without a prejudice. Kim, Dong-lee and Jang, Yong-hak criticized the rationality and the modernity, and they tried to find out solutions through novels. So they created the heroic characters such like saban and Yi Jang, Two novels are constituted of the lifetimes of Saban and Yi Jang who reflect philosophlies and intentions of writers. The lifetime of Saban and Yi Jang are consist of specific ingredients alike such like an extraordinary birth, leaving home, wanderings, a great determi-nation, confrontations, a triangular relationship, a tragedic ending. But meanings are very different. <The Cross of Saban> represents a embodyment of the Third Humanism of Kim, Dong-lee through Saban and Jejus＇ confrontations and deaths, on the ther hand <The Legend of Round Shape> shows through the deaths of all of the family, the purification of something like sins, vices, corruptions, namings and so on. In conclusion, this comparison shows the comman agonies of which writers lived in the same age of 1950s. beyond the distinction Old Generation between New Generation. The study that is escaped from the prejudice and based on the comparison and the examination about real works like this is needed to expand.
