This article has figured out the three points of mythology shown in 〈The legend of a circle〉, a full-length novel by Jang Yong-Hak. First of all, the mythological protagonist and also the head of the village shows an thorough insight through himself, and the completed his own sacrifice. Through this, he has cleansed his people of the sin of fratricidal murder, and contributed to reconstructing a new social order. Second is the hope to return to paradise, that is shown in the due process. Innate and universal human hopes to return to their paradise, to their mothers, is shown by modifications and combinations of three kinds of incest. Third is the protagonist’s death and resurrection through three times of cave search. This shows the importance of mystical salvation.
〈The legend of a circle〉 provides readers, who have lost trust on history through the shocks of the Korean war, with the mythological producibility that will cure the ills of modern civilization, through carefully planned development of events. By doing so, suggests the most effective method to overcome the fundamental anxiety and fear of modern life. At the current time, the shocks of the war called for the myths that will replace history.
