in this paper. I suggest that the following three characteristics are found from the characters in the works written by the 4 authors in the 1920s, namely Kim Dong-In, Hyun Jin-Kun, Yum Sang-Sup, and Na Do-Hyang. First, their personalities show diversity and all of them are outsiders. Secondly, they are anti-historic and anti-heroic. Thirdly, they pursue truth unlike most people who pursue values. I suggest that these characteristics of the people in the novels will provide the clues to understand the outsiders. Novels refuse to accept the fixed value system in the society and pursue new values and therefore, it is natural for novels to have new styles. Because novels have to put some distance from the fixed ideology and values of the society and embrace those who refuse to accept these values, novels may show the society which overthrows the existing values. To represent these characteristics, the main characters in the novels are outsiders who are different from others. In addition, characters of the novels are not historically important figures or great people. They are invented to show the complexity of truth and therefore, they may pursue the truth. Characters in the novels pursue the truth and important values rather than the happiness whereas common people pursue happiness which they consider important. Therefore, characters in the novels reflect the ideology and values which other people may not consider important. In that respect, they are important in understanding the outsiders of the society.
