In October 1479, the Joseon government obtained intelligence that the Ming government would shortly demand Joseon to send troops to aid Ming. king Seongjong gathered a meeting to deliberate upon the issue and summarily decided to do so as Ming would request later on. In the preparation process, Seongjong wanted to utilize the experience that had been collected during the 1467 campaign. Eo Yu-so and Yun Pil-sang, who participated in the previous engagement of 1467, was ordered to join the upcoming campaign.
At the time, the Joseon government was able to organize more than 10 thousand troops in less than a month, which shows that the defense capability of Joseon and the government’s control over the army was already substantially well developed. But there were also some problems. Eo Yu-so refused to depart, saying the river was not frozen enough for troops to tread upon it. Yun Pil-sang, who did depart, was successful in the engagements that he led, but the targets attacked by Joseon troops under his command were not the center of Geonju-wi, and instead were only one or two villages lying at the mouth of the installation. Hence, instead of being labelled as an ‘attack,’ ‘distant campaign(遠征)’ might be a better definition for the occasion.
Previous studies failed to reconstruct details of the campaign as well as the routes taken in the process. In this article, primary reconstruction of Yun’s campaign is attempted by using Illustration. Hopefully future studies would enlighten us further with all the details that surrounded the Geonju-wi campaign.
