Before Buddhism spread into China, traditional thoughts and folk beliefs had been all over the China society. Especially for the unity of belief and state, the administrator had been regarded as “Tian” of God.
When new religion from India which had different social system, not only Buddhism itself but also China"s social system had reached a new aspect for changes to accept each other.
The cultural transition found on the steles of carved statues made in Bei Wei period and the pagodas built in Bei Liang period is mainly researched in this article.
The pagodas built in Bei Liang period are awfully valuable for their unity and the unique features showing the regional and religious histories and the social aspects at that time.
When they were built, the troubles between folk beliefs of China and Buddhism had been deepened. The pagodas show fusion of Buddhism and Taoism as the attempt to solve those conflicts and can be regarded as the first Buddhist culture in China.
Later the prayers on the pagodas have also become the origin of the offering prayers to god in China. It is possible to understand the vocabularies used in translated sutras through the words on the pagodas such as Tingsinshi and Taoist(Taoshi).
Likewise, the steles with carved statues of Bei Wei shows mutual changes of the two ideas of Buddhism and Taoism. The historical events such as the movement of Yangzhou people to Pingcheng and the Buddhist persecutions had effected the steles.
They also show that Buddhism had affected Kou Qianzhi, the Taoshi of Bei Wei on his work of arranging Taoism tantras in many ways.
The style of Buddhist statues had been applied to Tain Zun statues. The prayers on the steles of Bei Wei had quoted the ones of the pagodas of Bei Liang. It means that Bei Liang"s Buddhism affected Bei Wei"s one in some ways.

중국은 고대부터 존재했던 전통사상과 전통 민간신앙 등이 사회 전반을 지배하고 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 ‘천(天)’의 개념과 위정자(爲政者)의 정통성을 결합시켰기 때문에 정교일치(政敎一致)의 관념이 인도와는 다른 사회구조를 이루고 있었다. 이러한 환경에 인도의 불교가 전파되었기 때문에 사상적 전환이 불가피할 수밖에 없다. 그리고 불교의 사상적 전환뿐만 아니라 중국 기존의 전통사상 역시 사상이나 수행 등의 측면에서 전환이 일어나기는 마찬가지였다. 이러한 전환의 과정과 배경 등에 관해 본고에서는 양주지역에서 발견되고 있는 북량탑(北涼塔)과 북위 건국 초기에 형성된 북위 조상비를 비교하여 살펴보았다.
북량(北涼)의 불교문화 중에서도 특히 10여 기가 넘는 북량탑은 모두 통일성과 당시 시대상황 및 지역사, 불교 신앙사를 알려주는 여러 정황들이 담겨 있는 귀중한 자료이다. 당시 중국 내부에서 일어나고 있는 불교와 전통사상과의 충돌 문제가 심화되는 배경 속에서 조성된 것이 북량탑이다. 그리고 이에 대한 해결점을 불교와 전통사상과의 융합 및 조화로 형성된 중국 최초의 불교문화라 평가할 수 있다. 특히 도교와의 융합을 표현하였으며, 더불어 개인 신앙활동의 대상으로 자리잡으면서 이후 중국에서 형성되는 발원문의 기본 형식을 제시하는 역할을 해주었다. 또한 북량탑 발원문 가운데 등장하는 ‘청신사(淸信士)’, ‘도사(道士)’ 등의 용어 역시 당시의 역경언어 및 신앙사에서 조명할 수 있는 불교에 대한 이해가 가능하게 한다.
양주 지역에서의 도불융합형태를 북량탑에서 찾아볼 수 있다면, 북위의 건국과 더불어 양주인의 평성 이주, 연이어 일어났던 폐불 등 일련의 사건으로 변화된 불교 및 도불융합의 양상은 북위 조상비를 통해 볼 수 있다. 북위 도사 구겸지에 의한 도교의 의궤가 정비되는 과정에 불교가 상당부분 영향을 주었다는 사실이 조상비를 통해 드러나고 있다. 천존상을 조성하는 데에 당시까지 조성되었던 불상의 전형적인 형식이 차용되고 있다. 또한 북위 조상비의 발원문 역시 북량탑 발원문의 형식을 그대로 원용하고 있어 북량불교의 외형적인 부분이 다수 북위의 신앙체계에 흡수되었음을 보여주고 있다.
