This study investigated library functions of Seowon by using case of Gyeongju Oksanseowon. Seowon"s collection of books varied a little depending upon Seowon to be given from the government and to be donated by local officials, literary men, offspring and native persons at rural areas, and another Seowon and clansman. Seowon bought books for financial source and made copy. Seowon published books by itself to educate and to improve state. And, Seowon regulated regulations for preservation and control of collection of books to manage by internal regulations.
Oksanseowon under same situation had different collection and contents of collection of books depending upon time. Since foundation, Oksanseowon had kept collection of books donated to be different from remaining Seowon. In the beginning of foundation, Oksanseowon kept collection of books donated and made copy of Sutaekbon(手澤本) of Hoijae(晦齋), enshrining man, and his offspring and literary men. Books published by Gyeongjubu(慶州府) were added.
Oksanseowon also published not only Hoijae"s writings but also historical books for Seowon education in the 17th century. The case was applied to Seowon that were founded around that time. Since the 17th century, each Seowon started to donate books published. Since middle of the 18th century, individuals" collection of works donated to Seowon remarkably increased because of unstable caste system at development of commodity-money economy and to strengthen family consciousness based on blood relative at fall of Yangban(兩班).
Oksanseowon prepared control guide of collection of books to take immediate actions against change of the times and to have a lot of collection of books so far. Since middle of the 19th century, Seowon was difficult to manage, so that not only local government officials but also powerful families who had influence upon control of Seowon took flexible actions against requests of lending of collection of books. They declined request of lending of books by local government officials by using authority of the king, and to prepare "Seo-chaek-cha-geo-rok(書冊借去錄)" and to elevate transparency of lending of collection of books and to clarify responsibility of loss and destruction of books.
