The word “university” originally means “community of teachers and scholars.” Today, it is an institution of higher education and research which grants academic degrees.
The Italian School System for university started from the University of Bologna(1088), which is one of the first universities in the world. For this reason, the school system of italian university sticked to old customs and used to have the differences from other european universities. However, European Integration imposed the european standard of education on the Italian School System. In 1997, based on the british system the Ministry of University and Research started to reform the university system as “3+2” system. It consists of three different courses; three years of bachelor course(corso di laurea), two years of master course(corso di laurea magistrale/specialistica) and five years of unified course of the bachelor’s and the master program(corso di laurea magistrale a ciclo unico). Then there are three different the post-master courses; Doctorate program (Dottorato di ricerca), School of specialization (Scuola di Specializzazione), and Master course in 2° level (Master idi 2° livello).
The reformation of the italian school system for university has been also effected in the architect system. The Association of Architects is not only for architecture but also urban planning, landscape, and conservation.
According to the integration of other associations, the role of architect is further subdivided by the area in the professional field. Besides, The architect’s level is divided into two grades; Senior architect and Junior architect.
To be an italian architect it is necessary to pass the registered architect examination. It consists in two different tests: practice and oral test, which are held twice per year. Who has a bachelor’s degree can apply only for the Junior Architect’s test, while who has a master’s degree can do for both; Junior and Senior Architect test.
As a conclusion, the big reformation of education and licence system in Italy is due to the European Integration. But, it is not a kind of self-transformation for the qualitative improvement.
People say, education is not for the present but for the future. And differentiation is one of the keys for the future. So, the 21st century universities will need more academic freedom rather than regulations.
