This study aims to reveal the influence of editorial cartoons published in Shanghai(Shanghai editorial cartoons) to the Chinese Civil War(1946-1949) and to review the values of the Shanghai editorial cartoons acquired by the war. Analyzing the characteristics of Shanghai editorial cartoons during the Chinese Civil War(1946-1949) was proceeded to accomplish the purposes.
Shanghai dominated by the Guomindang during the Chinese Civil War has been a economically and culturally developed larger city since the end of 19th century and also has established mass-production of publications with advances in printing,
Cartoons was produced and progressed with the publications in Shanghai. A considerable number of cartoonists have worked in Shanghai since the early 20th century. And they produced various editorial cartoons under the foreign invasions and frequent wars.
Cartoons focused on the current affairs rather than entertainment during the war. However even though they stressed on current affairs, they could not exclude the main characteristics of cartoons, namely, satirical wit and humor. Cartoons combining topical current affairs and humor help the chinese people understand the social issues much easier.
This study discovered that Shanghai editorial cartoons influenced in the values of chinese people during the Chinese Civil War. Shanghai editorial cartoons were attracted by the chinese people because of the diversity of their contents and styles.
Shanghai editorial cartoons reported the real experiences of the writers or the social aspect through the view of Sanmao, a war orphan, as well as the activities of Guomindang and the US. That formed a social consensus of the people who did not belong to neither Guomindang nor Gongchandang and it caused to weaken the political positions of Guomindang.
During the Chinese Civil War, cartoons acted as the weapon to move the people’s heart not a killing weapon. One of cartoons’ properties is criticism and resistance. Newspapers and journals such as Wenhuibao, Daogongbao and Wencui published Shanghai editorial cartoons. They inclined to be anti-foreign power or reported the anti-Japanese fight during the Chinese Civil War. Shanghai editorial cartoons were not affected by political propensity of the Left-Right wings rather criticized the social problems of China. That kind of role went against the interest of the Guomindang and gave the advantages to the Gongchandang which made an effort to resist the Guomindang.
