This paper aims to analyze comparative aspects of surface cohesive phenomena such as reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion in the process of English-Korean translation. A syntactic-semantic motive to check cohesive relations in translation is to interpret and derive exact and expressions. Syntactic conditions or discourse environments to which cohesive devices apply are different from language to language and are further dissimilar from register to register within a language. This means that cohesive mechanisms of a source language should be properly adjusted in English is translated into Korean, parametric values related to reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion must be checked and fixed up enough to meet the surface cohesive conditions for matching Korean syntactic structures and discourse texture and to satisfy the principle of economy and simplicity in the spirit of Universal Grammar as well.
