This study aims to apply leadership theories to the labor union setting and explores the possibility to develop the situational leadership theory of labor union. Different from the past research on union militancy, this study focuses on the dyadic relationship between union leaders and union members based on existing leadership theory. We made a situational labor leadership hypothesis as follows. The higher the pragmatic propensity of union members is, the more effective moderate leadership would be. Otherwise the militant leadership would be more effective. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the survey data set of the Organizational Diagnosis conducted in November of 2006 by the Research Center of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (hereafter the FKTU). According to hierarchical multiple regression results, it is argued that the discrepancy between leaders’ ideological pattern (militancy or moderation) and members’ pragmatic attitude determines the labor leaders’ effectiveness. The effectiveness of moderate union leadership was contingent on members’ pragmatic extent, and finally, this study challenge to the negative views that moderate union leadership cannot evoke union members’ activism.
