The purpose of this paper is to examine the irony of Yum, Sang Sub" literary theory. Yum, Sang Sub was the realistic novelist whose resistance against the Japanese colonial rule was realized in his fiction. And his rebellious spirit reaches the very summit in his four novels But most important thing is that irony was the essential way to express his realism.
The narrative fiction should have a structure and an various aesthetic element. It must, of course, stand in recognizable relation to life. Such novelist as Yum Sang Sub offers less a relation than a world. in its entirety. Especially Yum, Sang Sub has such a way to create the world which is recognizable as overlapping the empirical world but distinct in it"s selfcoherent intelligibility. That way is irony for him.
The point of irony is divided into two parts in this paper. One belongs to the field of rhetoric, the other is process of recognition as a theory of understanding. In the matter of process of recognition, there are three stages in irony like this 1. reciprocity, 2. interruption, 3.unification.
As the resistant writer, Yum, Sang Sub and his characters in his fiction showed a lot of irony by the changes in those process.
So in this paper the purpose of this study on irony brings to a focus way to get the theory of understanding the irony in Yum, Sang Sub" novels and the way to create ironical fictions as the result of his ironical understanding.
