In the epoch of the Character Reform, Lin Yun [林尹], the expert philologist of Taiwan, concluded, “there is a phenomenon that both initial and vowel of Pictophonetic Characters are different from those of their phonetic-complement.” This belongs to the last one among the five categories of Pictophonetic Characters Lin Yun set up, under the title of ‘Both of Initial and Vowel are different (between Pictophonetic Character and Phonetic Complement) [声韵畢異]’. According to Lin Yun, This phenomenon is due to the fact that the sound of the characters which were without phonetic-complement were diverse, and initial or vowel must have closely been connected with its phonetic-complement when Pictophonetic Characters were initially created.
This essay is to review the principle of Traditional Six Categories presented on the 32 Simplified Chinese Characters, among 190 ‘Simplified-Popularized Form’ characters, which mostly could be defined as belong to the category of ‘Both of Initials and Vowels are different’. Among these, 30 Simplified Chinese Characters consisted of 12 sorts of Complements are arranged according to Phonetic-Complement [聲符偏旁], while 2 Simplified Chinese Characters consisted of 2 sorts of Complements are arranged according to Semantic-Complement [形符偏旁]. The latter is arranged side by side with the Phonetic-Complement, as these 2 sorts of Complements could work as Phonetic as well as Semantic.
