This study is to explore a counter-meanings of the film 《As One(2012)》from the critical perspective of gender. Informed by Susan Birrell & Mary McDonald’s ‘Reading Sport Project,’ a method for reading sport incidents or individuals through mediated narratives at the articulation of power relation, we take away the film as a cultural text in which gender relations are embedded. Inspired by Stuart Hall’s theoretical thought, in addition, we attempt to practice a counter-reading as opposed to the dominant reading of the film. Considering the dominant discourse of the link between sport and nation-state, it is possible to interpret that the film highlights the role of sport as a way of imaging and narrating Korea as a unified nation. Within this dominant frame, the film seems to also conveys a critical sense of gender, given that the protagonists are played by women characters; the film highlights sistership as a medium of the unification; male characters are portrayed as comic and non-decisive ones. However, our argument is that the film does not fully provide with a critical consciousness of gender, in terms of two points: 1) a narrative characteristic represented an unstable patriarchy of women protagonists’ family structure and environment, and 2) a representation style that portrays them as de-humanized and de-sexualized characters.
