The purpose of this study is the analysis and the consideration of the receiver’s utterance used for the self-effacements that were appeared during conversation.
The data was collected by the conversation of six pairs of Japanese female university students that haven"t seen each other.
It was found that the self-effacements were appeared sixteen times, and the contents of the self-effacements are almost about ability. The self-effacements that were appeared of speaker own free will were more than the self-effacements that were appeared as the answers of the questions.
As the receiver’s utterance used for the self-effacements, There were ‘denial of self-effacement’ and ‘expressing eympathy of self-effacement’. In ‘expressing empathy of self-effacement’, there were the slow formation of the empathy as the mutual utterance and the answer with the self-effacement to the self-effacement.
The former study for the self-effacement was just the questionnaire survey method. As the results of the analysis of the actual conversation data, it was proved that the analysis results of the questionnaire survey were appeared in the actual conversation.
The standard of the self-effacement is different by the culture and country. This being so, it can be difficult that Japanese language learners understand and use the self-effacement that Japanese use. The self-effacement and the receiver’s utterance used for the self-effacement will be analyzed in the diverse position to apply the study result to the conversational education for Japanese language learners.
