In the 1960s American modern ceramic art under the great influence of abstract expressionism began to adopt an experimental and non-functional object characterized by the pursuit of unintentional images in clay inn the 1960s. This new area of ceramic art was developed into a new art form of space and media by using clay. Since the 1960s ceramic sculpture can be divided into two different trends in its artistic expressions. The first trend represents the efforts to express the abstract and repeated patterns of image naturally manifested in clay. The second trend represents the figurative expression in the funk ceramic sculpture to realistically convey sarcastic images through the adoption of the concepts of pop art. Since the 1960s the funk ceramic sculpture began to mushroom along the American Westcoast Area. The new sculpture played a great role in taking root of figurative ceramic sculpture in a new sculptural form. This new form derived from the combination of ceramic art with modern art with the incorporation of mass consumption culture. There exists a negative perspective on the part of ceramic artists on the creation of ceramic sculptures without practicality and function by the use of clay as an artistic medium. Yet the development of new experimental techniques with the use of clay, glaze, and underglaze contributed to the emergence of new artistic expressions of modern ceramic art and fine art. These experimental efforts to creat new forms of artistic expressions continue among ceramic artists and general artists in the 21 century. This article seeks to explain how clay as an artistic medium has been used in the figurative ceramic sculpture from the different perspectives of traditional and functional ceramic art. It also aims to explain the developmental process of figurative ceramic sculpture as an art form and its social and cultural impact on modern ceramic art.
