From the combined perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper investigates contextual manipulation of the system of transitivity that underlies the choices journalists have to make in reporting socio-economic issues and problems. Data were collected from five newspaper articles published in October and November of 2013 by a Korean newspaper. The articles were divided into two categories; 1) articles reporting on economic accidents or issues as a result of more powerful entities negatively affecting other lower institutions, and 2) articles on institutions and individuals representative of institutions who bring about changes in the social status quo. We first explore various ways in which semiotic power relations are realized through the system of transitivity. We then examine the meta-redundancy inherent in the way that the distribution and subversion of such power relations are interrelated to the contextual manipulation of the system of transitivity. On the basis of our analysis, we argue that lexicogrammatical transitivity choices not only function to convey experiential meanings but also implicitly construct for the reader particular ideological stances of the writer.
