Aziz Mahmud Hudayi, widely respected as the qutb at the turn of the seventeenth-century, is regarded as a paragon of Sunni sufi, and his life and deeds are often interpreted in that light. However, put under scrutiny, he appears to have been rather close to what was considered dangerous at that time: his master’s Bayrami order had outfits that might seem to symbolize Alid loyalty, and his sufi genealogy featured shaykhs who could have leaned toward non-orthodox kinds of ecstatic sufism. His emphasis on sharia-abiding and criticism of the Kızılba? and Simavni groups seem to reflect his motivation to protect himself and his milieu. With such moves, Hudayi did ride the waves of confessionalization of the second half of the sixteenth century. Hudayi, meanwhile, accommodated hitherto ostracized elements such as the Melamis by allowing them to find refuge in his newly organized “moderate and safe” Celveti order and lodge. His argument that sufi shaykhs who seemingly violate sharia may actually be very virtuous and their disciples should trust and obey them must be a reflection of his intention to protect ill-reputed sufis. Hudayi commanded an area of influence that included high-ranking ulama and the most ecstatic sufis while drawing the broadest boundary of sunnism, from which only the unsalvageable such as the Shiis and Simavnis were excluded.
